[ddots-l] Re: protools

Hi Brian,
A number of folks have taken a very close look at the possibility of
scripting JAWS for Pro Tools. Unfortunately, since the program was
originally written for the Mac, it was not ported over to Windows in a very
standard way. It would take an extraordinary amount of scripting and the
accessibility wouldn't be quite what it is with Sonar. Having said that,
we're trying to work with Digidesign to gain access to some particular code
that might open a few doors in terms of accessibility. In the meantime, the
best way to access Pro Tools is on a Mac running OS 9.2.2 with the outSPOKEN
screen reader. Contact me off list for more details.
I'm currently on the beta team for Tiger, apple's next major release of OS
X, which, as you heard, will have a built-in screen reader called VoiceOver.
I'm also a beta tester for Pro Tools and am working with them to help ensure
future accessibility with the Mac screen reader. Tiger will be out in June
and the next major release of Pro Tools will follow shortly thereafter.
Hopefully, all will go smoothly and students might have a chance to use it
this fall. No promises, of course, but I'm truly hopeful.
Best,
Jerry Halatyn
