Phil replied: it's not. Sean Cummins has had his FW1884 for years and has
had no issues at all. Herman Fermin has had his for quite some time too.
Had mine for 11 months and experienced nothing but rock solid performance.

Well it's true, what I have is working, but that 32 track macki board, is
really taking up a ton of space, and I'll bet this new board would be
quieter. I've pretty much decided, I don't want to hastle with recording
bands in here, so I really don't need a lot of mike ins, I mean 8 would be
plenty for me. The fader problem is something I've never had with thiws
big old beast before. I hope that's not a regular occurence with the 1884.

are you not happy with what you currently have?
I believe in having two seperit components as if your board goes dead, at
least you'd still have the audio card to do the job.
I have the mackie universal board, and it is very quiet indeed, and my
motu pre amps are very quiet too.
I suppose though if you are looking to save space the 1884 is great, I
had one at one point but got myself in to a jam when the faders had to be
surviced, and I was with out my studio for about two weeks while it was
beeing repaired.
The older tascam 1884 wer better designed then the newer batch that I
picked up 6 months ago.
I also had a project mix from m-audio, but got tired of the pre amps.----

Greg wrote: Phil if I got the tascam would I be by passing my Motu?
Or would the two work together in some way?
Phil replied: you could use them together or, you could sell your MOTU
and Mackie off
Greg wrote: Right now the MOTU has the 8 ins
and outs, plugged in to my mack board, and I pretty much just use 1 and
2.
Hardly ever the others, now that I import audio to mix. I wonder if I
could
do alright with out the Mackie and the MOTU if I got this board?
Phil replied: the FW1884 has 8 mike line inputs with inserts and 2 banks
of phantom power, plus an ADAT input, SPDIF input and output and 4 MIDI
input and output ports. so, you could probably managed fine without the
Mackie. Note: the FW1884 doesn't have an EQ however, that's not a big
deal as you would be using the EQ in Sonar. The FW1884 is great for
recording automation in Sonar as it has 9 motorised faders. Using it,
feels much more like using a concel.
Greg wrote: And, would this board be quieter?
Phil replied: I don't know as I don't run a Mackie here. Having said
that, the pree-amps in the FW1884 are very quiet indeed. After
purchasing the FW1884, I got rid of my MOTU 2408.
Greg wrote: I'm assuming you can run mikes through.
Phil replied: you can indeed. See my comments above. You can read more
about how to use the FW1884, over on my website. Go to the site, and
ether from the broadband site or, the dialup site, choose the
"accessibility Training" page. Then, you can access the "FW1884 for
dummies" document, there.
