Usually, you the unknown function call when arrowing right or left.
Press up or down arrow and you should then start hearing menus in JAWS

where would that be? my jaws 7 won't anounce the menues it says unknown 
function called to  and then I can't understand what is beeing said.

Sarah,

These do not affect playback. You need to use one of the playback
plug-ins that will insert controller volume commands into the score. I
can't remember the plug-in name, but it should be immediately apparent
when you browse down the list.
