Hi all
I'm just looking for some opinions on this subject and the sizes of
your mixing rooms and your monitors. The other day I read something a
guy said, if your monitor is too big for your room you won't get the
best out of your sound because the size of your room doesn't allow the
frequency to fully develop. Now by theory we know a 20 Hz wave takes
17.2 meters to fully develop or complete a cycle, a 100 Hz wave 3.44
meters etc. you get the idea. Now if looked at it this way that guys
theory doesn't make scence at all because it means everybody has to
have rooms longer than 3.44 meters to properly recreate anything below
100 Hz and as for 20 Hz, well not even mastering engineers who usually
have long mixing rooms has 17.2 meter long rooms. Now I know you can't
use 15 inch speakers in a 3 x 3 meter room that would just be stupid
because you have to push speakers to a certain level to get a propper
sound and by the time you get a decent level through the frequency
range your 15 inch speakers would brake your walls and ear drums.
I'm currently in the process of getting myself a pair of monitors for
mixing, I currently have a 4 x 3.5 meter room, it's acoustically
treated however with time I still want to improve it a lot. Anyway I
must choose between 6 inch or 8 inch monitors, the main difference
between the 2 except for the price, size and waight is obviously the
bass responce but my question is, will the 6 have too little bass or
will the 8 have too much bass for my room. This other thing I read
said you must choose your monitors wisely because you'll have them for
a long time and you might move to another space, now this makes scence
to me because in a year or 2 I might move to a bigger place and then
I'm stuck with small monitors. I know some guys who does pritty decent
stuff with 5 inch monitors but I'm scared of going too small or too
big I need enough bass but don't want too much for my room. Anyway
would be nice to hear what you guys use.
