[ddots-l] Re: new high speed system experiencing major audio drop outs and slowing downs

yes during both playback and recording. I have red a few things about OS settings such as disabling wireless, and anti virus etc. I tried Asio but still get drop outs. Asio drivers give true drop outs, as in the sound cuts out completely and a dialogue box pops up announcing the audio drop out. WDM drop outs sound more like the audio slowing way down and crackling a little bit almost seemingly stretching.

I will reinstall sonar soon if I must. This is just too crazy. I had better performance with my laptop (512 mb RAM 1.6 Ghz processor. Now with Sonar 6 and my new 2 Gig RAM, 3 Ghz dual core processor, I can't win the audio drop out battle.

I don't know if this helps solve the mystery, and believe me, I would like to have this case wrapped up soon... The audio trouble doesn't seem to happen the first time I play a track after opening it for the first time. it seems to jump in gradually. it's not creeping in slowly though, it appears and is full on. I change the buffer size and I O buffer size and then go back to the project and sometimes the changes seem to help temporarily.

If I reinstall sonar, do you know if I can just download it from the Cakewalk Web site or do I need to install the DVD and then update to Sonar 6.2?

I truly appreciate your help.

Is it possible that my RAM and processor just don't cut it? Should I have gotten a faster processor? I red the ideal specs were 1 G of RAM and 2.8 Ghz processor. I thought I was good to get a little more...

In that case, your projet isn't strictly just a MIDI project since a soft
synth requires both a MIDI and an audio track to work. Remind me, do the
audio dropouts happen during recording as well as playback?

I'm using soft synths.

Are you using soft synths or hardware ones?

Crackles and audio drop outs only occur in midi based projects.
Everything works well until part way through the project and then it
starts to slow down and crackle and gargle and sometimes stop.

What of the midi internal clock etc? I have checked a few things in
the Projects menu item under Audio in order to sync the midi drum
machine I'm using but didn't touch the internal clock settings etc.

If you're getting crackels, you may have a timing problem. Do you
have dropouts on projects that are MIDI only, or only with projects
which include audio? K.

I am not sure if my hard drive is 7200 rpm. From system specs it
reads: Intel Pentium 5, 2 gig of RAM, 3 Ghz processor.

I tried using the Asio driver but got similar drop outs, (although
with Asio, the I had constant slight crackling sounds before the
complete sound drop out.

I will try the other suggestions incuding re installing Sonar. I
recall checking a couple of extra check boxes when installing Sonar
for things I wasn't 100% sure about.

I have loaded a similar size project from my previous system and got
the audio drop outs. \

Thanks all. I hope to get this sorted out soon.

Hi:
you mentioned that you are using a few plug ins. maybe one of those
plug ins is very heavy . i have never used perfect space but i've
heard in this

list that it puts a high load.
did you try working without an internet connection?
also try loading a full project that played well in your old
machine. is your new hard drive at least 7200 rpm? try working with
wdm and asio. never use m m e. good luck.

i also have problems with audio when using skipe and sonar at the
same time.

drop outs and slowing downs

   Hi,
I bought a new computer about a month ago. It is used primarily
for recording with Sonar. I was having minor audio drop out
problems before with my laptop (512 Mb of Ram and a 1.6 Ghz
processor).

I went with a new system that exceeds the Cakewalk ideal specs for
performance.

The new PC has 2 Gig of RAM and a 3 GH dual core processor- intel
pentium. Windows XP Home. using JAWS 8.0.

Sonar is up to date and the latest CT is installed and responding
well.

I turn my AVG off, and disengage the wireless connection before
opening Sonar.

I am using a Presonus Firepod Audio controller with the latest
drivers.

I have tried usig my old Tascam US-122 audio controller and I get
the same results:

Audio projects with mor than 8 tracks and a few plug ins start to
slow down randomly on playback and sometimes while recording.

I am using the WDM driver and have even turned the buffer % up to
20 which occasionally helps but then it happens again soon after
that. The sound is like a scratchy record slowing down.

I have tried a bunch of things like checking and unchecking the
read write cashing, multi processing engine, and have set the bit
rate down to

16.

I used the Insert num pad 3 keystroke at one point and I think it
said I was using 74 percent CPU.

I can't get that reading again. I must have been in a real time
effect when I got that reading.

I always press F6 at the beginning and do the control F2 twice
quickly thing too.

If it only happend once in a while I could live with it but we're
talkin' once every 10 minutes or so.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't installed anything on this computer except Internet
Explorer, Sonar, CT, JAWS, GoldWave and Winamp.

I don't know how to use the windows task manager to find out what
might be loading the system down.

I saved my pennies for a long time to get this new computer so it
would work well and it's been so frustrating but I just know there
is a solution out there.

Sorry to lay my tale of wo on you like this.
