Hi. The synths used on moving pictures by rush were a mini moog, an Oberheim OB-x, and anOberheim OB8. That's what my research dug up anyways. I loved the sound of the synth on that track, the richness and the faze effect. He'd built custom synth units for Tangerine Dream prior to starting up the company. I had the PPG Wave 2.3, which was a wavetable-based digital synth with analog filters and 4 envelope generators. The first three envelopes controlled the usual filter cutoff, volume and pitch modulations, but the fourth allowed you to flip through a wavetable over the duration of a note. The basic instrument had a 5 octave keyboard and a very distinctive clangy sound that stood up well to being layered a lot of times, but there were lots of possibilities for expansion, which I never got into as my eyes packed up and my musical revenue went with them. There was the Waveterm, which was a sampler unit with built-in visual display of the waveform being manipulated and an 8-inch floppy drive (yes, you didn't misread it - a whole 8 inches). There was a 10MB hard drive unit for serious Waveterm users and an 88-note weighted controller keyboard with velocity and after-touch and some of its own sample storage that could be populated by the Waveterm (this keyboard wouldn't function at all without the main 2.3 keyboard). You could also use up to 2 expansion units (the 2.3 keyboard units as a keyboardless rack) to give a maximum 24-note poly. A maxed-out system could be had for just under £20,000 and you can now buy a very faithful VST version (bundled with a drum synth and a filter plug-in) in the form of the Waldorf Edition software pack (think I paid £38 for mine). I sold the keyboard for £1500 when I went to university to retrain after my blindness and I regret it to this day - my wife misses "the big blue beastie" as she called it (most of it was black, but the control panel was in a beautiful shade of blue). Andy Thomas, the guy who sold me mine, says that Frankie's Welcome to the Pleasure Dome album is the only demo you ever needed for the PPG 2.3, though most people think it was all done on a Fairlight, most of the synth work was a PPG. Other notable users are/were Stevie Wonder (that bloke again) and Geddy Lee of Rush fame, though the instrument is all over the 80s charts. Best wishes. My PPG paid for itself by me leasing it out to the Birmingham studio crowd, otherwise I couldn't have generated enough to keep up the first year's payments. Best wishes. My first foray into computerized music making was the synclavier, which in many ways has never been beaten in terms of usability. Everything was controled by this huge button pannel and one large spring-loaded knob on the keyboard unit itself as far as the synth and sequencer were concerned. Considering the processing they had at the time, the timing was rock solid and sound designing was (at least for me) a snap. There are times I seriously think of getting my hands on one now, even though the tone generators were 8 bit and prone to aliasing.
