Absolutely agree. I took monthly classical piano lessons for three years and 
the scales/fingerings were extremely helpful to my ability to play pieces I 
already knew, as well as making it easier to learn new ones. Knowing the 
scales is part of the whole concept of chord structure.

Having the teacher sit there side-by-side to help explain the correct 
fingering techniques was the only way I was going to ever learn correctly. 
Using a book with finger numbers would not have worked for me.

Have you looked for a traditional piano teacher, someone who would
work with you through an established system, conservatory, Suzuki,
etc.?
