Again, I recommend the website, or securing a free demo.
<http://www.kurzweiledu.com> It isn't appropriate to even attempt to try to
represent the types of
information access tasks which can be accomplished through the use of Kurzweil
1000, but perhaps the Moderator and others will forgive me if this brief
recitation encourages the questioners to get off their duffs and go to the
website.
scaning and recognition of written, or electronic images of text--such as those
in "pdf" files; editing of text with all that represents with respect to block
manipulations, spell checks, find and replace, forward and reverse braille
translation;
enhanced display capabilities for partially-sighted persons, including image
view of page;
standard, scientific, statistical, and business/financial calculators;
ability to move text to portable notetaking devices in user's choice of file
formats, ability to send text to e-mail recipients as inclusion or attachment,
ability to
create ".wav" or ".mp3" files and move them to a variety of devices;
recognition and display in over 185 languages and 255 file formats, currency
recognition (US, european, Canadian, British);
ability to send and receive faxes, perform photo copies-including cropping as a
totally blind person;
scanning recognition and reading simultaneously with no limit other than disk
space on document size, ability to access books magazines encyclopedias
and other reference works online, document management utilities, online (on the
system) contextual help/manuals/reference documentation, free Mon. Fri.
tech support, support listserv, website with knowledge base documentation and
other supportive colaterals, online update and news and announcement
facilities, Etc. Etc. Etc.

I've done okay with OmnPage in the days when I used such a thing. What
can Open Book or K1000 do that OmniPage can't?

Yep it's definitely still available and yes, it's for reading print.
It all depends what you want though. You might be fine with a
third-party off the shelf OCR program like Omnipage or FineReader,
instead of a more pricy blind-specific program like K1000 or
Freedom Scientific's Openbook.
