[ddots-l] jingles for commercials

Hi,

I don't know if anyone on either list has had experience with writing and 
marketing their material for radio or television commercials, but i have a 
question on how that works.

If you're writing different tunes, do you find products that you think the tune 
will be suitable for, and then creat a portfolio using your tune with slides of 
that product? Or do you just send out your music to different ad agencies and 
manufacturers, and let them determine what they want to use your stuff for? Any 
help would greatly be appreciated here.
