Bill:
Make sure he wasn't trying to use live synth pro, which definitely does not work with dual core. I have converted many of the sound fonts I use to sfz format now because of this.

This all points to those wonderful ADK PC's doesn't it?

Not necessarily. As those of you who have been using PC's in general and
especially those who have been using PC's to make music are well aware,
there are dozens, perhaps hundreds, even thousands of variables, when it
comes to tracking down an incompatibility problem. We have sold a good
number of systems and they seem to be performing quite well.

This morning I had a conversation with two experts who kindly let me know
that the presence of certain third-party software might also cause the
problem our customer had with the TASCAM drivers. These two expert users
have used the TASCAM 1884 for a very long time now with consistently good
results.

My conclusion that the TASCAM drivers must not have been updated to work
with multi-core processors was clearly wrong. It may be that our customer
has some outdated derivers but I don't believe so. The fact remains that he
unchecked the multi-processing option and things got way better. But why?
And why couldn't he use the multi-processing option with SONAR in the first
place? We will need to investigate to determine if he has any third-party
software that may be causing processing delays that would result in
drop-outs. Until I have something specific to say, I will not mention any
third-party applications by name. I have definitely done enough stirring up
of the natives for this week! :)

Phil replied: agreed. This would also explain why your customers are also
experiencing problems
with other hardware such as the Presonus Firepod. Both the Tascam FW1884
and the Presonus Firepod
are excellent pieces of kit. This all points to those wonderful ADK PC's
doesn't it?

Hey Bill
Here's a recommendation for you with the 1884.

Dell

My Dell from heaven is working just fine.
Perhaps it is those ADK machines that you guys are using...

Hi, Stacy,

What audio interface are you using? We have recently learned that some
manufacturers have not upgraded their drivers to support the SONAR
multi-processor option. Check under Options | Audio | Advanced to see if
"Use Multiprocessing Engine" is checked. If it is, uncheck it, close
SONAR,
restart and see if you find any major improvements. If you still do not,
try running the Wave Profiler (under Options | Audio | General, I
believe),
close SONAR, restart.

One customer who has a very fast quad-core system, learned the hard way
(along with us at DD) that the TASCAM 1884 drivers do not support
multi-core
processing. Once he unchecked "Use Multi-Processor", all of his
drop-outs
went away! Is anyone using the 1884 with the multiprocessing engine
checked? It would be nice if there was an alternative set of drivers.

Bill

Hi Gord,

At this point in the project I have turned latency up to 100%, I'm just
chizeling the track down with some subtle effects. If I turn the
latency
down to even 60% I get the dropout stutter stuff.

It's weird though, I can work on this project for about20 minutes or so
with absolutely no trouble and then the drop outs start happening and I
have to start turning the latency up etc. to get consistent performance
otherwise known as no drop outs and no audio stuttering. Any ideas why
the performance seems to ware down over time, a relatively short time.

Cheers.
