I'd had similar weirdness with an external usb drive
that I'd tried out on an Apple OS X machine. When I
tried to reformat it on the XP machine it wouldn't let
me. So I put it back on the Apple machine and erased
it [if my memory serves me].
I'd seen similar oddities when I had a linux system
drive that I wanted to use on a windows box. I had to
use a linux utility to wipe it then I could have
windows see it was unformatted and proceed.
