[ddots-l] Re: Unusual use of Reverbs and Delays

Rod, the reason for putting reverb on a bus, isn't to do with whether you want the reverb to be available to other tracks or not. It's to do with how you would normally patch affects. Think of it this way. If you were using reverb when using hardware such as a mixing concel. you would normally add the reverb to an Aux on the mixing desk.

Adding reverb in the way you have described on to the track bin, would be the same as plugging the hardware reverb unit into the insert on a channel on your mixing concel. Adding reverb in this way, gives you much less control over the affect and also causes the affect to come out in mono. Where as, if you actually add a send, and add the reverb in the Aux pane then, you can easily control how much reverb the track is sent with the send.

You can still go into the property page of the reverb if required an alter how much dry and wet signal is sent through. Note: some reverb affects such as the Lexicon Pantheon, need to be turned down a lot because, they are so good at what they do. I quite often will choose one of the presets from the Pantheon and turn the send down to minus 25 on a track or, more.

By the way, Jeanette, I often insert my reverb the way you describe, and I
have had no problem with it. I think the reason for putting it on a bus is
just so that you can use it with another tract without having to patch
another one.
I only do that for vocals though. Others I put it on a bus send.

Hi everyone,

I have a question. I know that you normally use reverbs and delays via a
bus and then you insert a send onto the track you want the effect on.
But,
with Sonars freeze facility, it doesn't really matter how many instances
of
reverbs and delays you use. So here is what I tried to do: Instead of
putting the reverb and delay on the bus, I put it on the track and lowered
the wetness to around 6%. The entire signal then goes through the effect.
The reason I am trying this is so that when I solo that one track (for
example a lead vocal) I can hear it with the effect. Otherwise I either
hear
it dry or have to also solo the reverb bus but then I hear the reverb of
all
the other instruments as well.

1. Is this recommended (probably not)
2. Does this method give a poorer quality signal?
3. I would appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks,
Jeanette
