Subject: [ddots-l] U S B audio sound card & MIDI interface dillemma

Hey, Guys!

I am trying to purchase both an external audio card compatible with Cakewalk Sonar, and a U S B MIDI interface as inexpensively as possible.

I was hoping to find them conveniently wrapped up in a combination package, but haven't found anything accessible yet. I tried the E-MU 0404, but couldn't even install the software, because it was inaccessible. I have looked at many M-Audio units, but they don't have a combination audio/MIDI interface in a U S B model.

I am trying to stay under $200 for both units, or for a combination unit, but haven't been successful yet. I have heard good things about the Tascam 1641 from a lister out here, but it doesn't fall within my budget, so I inquired about another Tascam unit, but was told by more than one musician, as well as in many reviews, that they have a popping/clicking problem inherent in those units.

At this point, I am thinking that it might be best to buy two separate units, one for the audio portion, and one for the MIDI interface. I just hate to complicate it quite that much. Plus, I am not sure that I can stay under budget that way, but I may be left with no choice.

Does anyone have any comments, suggestions, models to try, anything?

   Thanks much!

Billy
