Yes, very important for many reasons to be about nine inches to a foot away from a decent condensor. some really cheap condensors distort or sound distorted no matter what. Of course your AKG is a very nice mic for vocals. Just picked up a Rode NT2A which I love and it has padding in case of something being way too loud but have a feeling its mostly being a bit too close unless using a dynamic mic of some kind like an SM57 or SM58. For me, good condensor is only way to go and there are some decent ones that aren't too expensive. Been real happy with Studio Project C1 and the Rode NT1A is very affordable for real good sound and quite sensitive. Maybe you're using a condenser microphone, and you might be too close. I
found this out the hard way, as I have an AKG414, and these microphones are
very sensitive. I'm naturally an alto, but I could sometimes go into the
mezzo Soprano and the soprano ranges, the soprano range is the one that
causes my voice to distort, as I project the high notes, and sometimes I sit
too close to the microphone, which in turn causes distortion.

Subject: [ddots-l] Question about recording vocals

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some ideas about this. I have a very
dynamic voice. What I mean is that my dynamic range is very wide Which is
why I don't get why my vocals always seam to have a slitely saturated sound with or with out compression. Maybe the best way to describe it is that they
always sound a little distorted. At first I thought that maybe I was
recording with too much compression on my pre/amp. So then I made sure that
the compressor was very light and I still had the same problem. Then I
decided to turn off the compressor all together, but still no luck. Anyone
have suggestions for me? I have run out of things to try.

Oh and I always make sure that my input meters don't go below -6.0.
May the peace of God which passes all understanding gard your heart and
mind in Christ Jesus.

God bless you!
