Greg,
I have several of the Proteus Packs for Dimension Pro. I've also owned a
few of the E-Mu Proteus sound font collections (like for the MoPhat,
Planet Phat, Orbit, the module madness proteus 1/2/3, etc). The
Dimension Pro versions sound a bit more like a real Proteus. You get
reverb, autopanner, and other effects that were part of the original
sound. It isn't quite what was originally there, of course, but it is
way better than the sound fonts. Also, the sampling and voice
programming seems much better to me, also.
Comparing the MoPhat sound font to the Dimension version is a good
specific example. The sound font version sounded like they sampled
individual notes from the MoPhat's voices. With the sound font, the
voices sound very strange near the ends of the keyboard. It sounds as if
the designers plugged a MoPhat into their computer, and just sampled
every voice at each octave or so. The pitch shifting/stretching is very
bad in many voices. Of course, I never used those sound fonts for the
instrument voices, but instead went to them for the drums, sound
effects, hits/stabs/etc. Those were the classic E-Mu sounds that I
wanted. The Dimension version of MoPhat uses the original PCM
data/samples from the MoPhat. The result isn't as perfect like a proteus
as some of the advertisements might have you believe, but, since the
voices are programmed instead of just sampled, they're a lot more
expressive than what you'd find in a sound font.
BTW: As a Cakewalk dealer, I believe that Dancing Dots could supply you
with the Proteus Packs for Dimension Pro, if you decide to buy them. If
you decide to get all 6 of them at once, you can get the complete set
for just under $300. There are over 2000 presets in that set, which will
certainly beaf up your Dimension Pro sample library.

Subject: [ddots-l] Question about expantion packs for dimention
Where do I go to get the expansion packs I forgot. also I have many of
the proteus sounds from digital sound factory. Do they make these sound
any better with dimension, adding echo, stereo or reverb to them, or are
they the same? Can anyone comment?
