On Behalf Of Matthew McLaren Sent: Sunday, February 25, 2007 7:41 AM To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ddots-l] Re: OT: Formatting computer advice please hi there. i'm assuming you have been running disk defrags and stuff reasonably regularly. this can really speed things up. another suggestion is to download a program called "regscrub". its free and accessible. and it'll clean out all those dead registries that you dont need any more which can also speed things up. Another thing is to check what you have on startup. To do this, go to start, go to run, and type: "msconfig" with out the quotes. Then go across to the start up tab. Its the 5th or 6th one from the left i think. then if you tab once you will b in a list of all your processes that automatically come up on startup. Have a look through these. Switching the useless ones off can also free up resources. also you can run the disk clean up utility which can free up HD space and it gets rid of old temp files that slow up your system. finally. to check the specs of your computer, go to start, go to run again. and type "dxdiag" If a msg comes up asking if your sure, just say yes, and then it'll
take
u to a property sheet. On the very first screen it puts u on, u will
find,
your computers specs. hope all this helps. cheers Matthew McLaren Post Producer for: Darker Projects: Audio Theatre in a Darker Shade http://www.darkerprojects.com Colonial Radio Theatre on the air http://www.colonialradio.com/ Mail: mattymc2@xxxxxxxxxx MSN: mr_squigy_head@xxxxxxxxxxx Skype: mattymc2 ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Eagle" <onlineeagle@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, February 25, 2007 10:37 PM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: OT: Formatting computer advice please HI Phill and others. I assume that because my laptop has been running without a format for over two years now its picked up a lot of nasty things. For instance I am now running AVG, but previously was running Norton. I have installed three different sound cards at some point or other not including my pre-installed sound card which is always there of course. I have probably installed a lot of software that I later uninstalled once I found it inaccessible. I have upgraded from sonar 3 with Caketalking to Sonar 6.2 with JSonar. The computer as a whole works fine, but I imagine there's a lot in the registry that doesn't need to be there anymore. For instance. If I download a trial version of a piece of software like when I tried a WMA recorder, but then decided not to buy the product in favour of the Open Source alternative CDEX, the WMA software has probably left an imprint in my registry so that I can't cheat and download it again and keep using the trial version. I assume therefore that my computer is a little cluttered. My computer in general is quite fast. Running the internet is fine, word processing of course is fine. Recording software other than Sonar, i.e. CDEX is fine, but Sonar doesn't seem to be able to cope as well. I understand that Sonar 6.2 demands more from the computer, but I can't work out why I get dropouts just by recording one track of audio for three minutes. To combat audio dropouts, I have tried most things if not all the suggestions in the Sonar help for improving audio performance. I am only recording at 16 Bit 44,1 KHZ by the way. I have recently started disconnecting from the internet, and quitting AVG, something that I didn't used to do, and didn't seem to need to do in Sonar 3. This doesn't seem to help. I found an article on the internet about the best tweaks for Windows XP for audio use, which doesn't seem to have changed anything. I'm now toying with the following ideas. AT the back of my mind I am thinking of downgrading to sonar 3,2 and Caketalking as well. This is nothing to do with JSonar, but at least it should be a reliable system for the time being. I don't seem to use many of the features in Sonar 6 that I'm aware of so this may be a good temporary solution. The other idea is to format the hard drive, and probably the whole drive, C and D partition as well. I would assume that this means I can start from scratch and there shouldn't be any nasty things lying hidden in the inner sanctum of the computer. The other idea is to do nothing and hope that someone e-mails this list saying: "Hey why don't you just ." and hey presto, the problems have miraculously gone. Another prospect is to buy a new laptop. I could even use my old laptop for the internet, napster, and cdex and my new laptop simply for audio, or just be careful to not install any new software on the new laptop until it has been tested on the old one. By the way I don't install a lot of software, before you think I'm a crazed software junky. And so, I will read your replies and maybe a solution will rear its head. How do I find such information as how much ram I have and memory and things like that? That might be helpful if I could inform you of that.. Thanks people.
