One thing I did once was to use four mics, two on the top horn and two for
the bottom drum.  I used two T bars, and positioned the mikes in an Ortf
pattern.  Meaning, the mics sort of cross over each other, so the capsules
are about 6 inches apart and at about 120 degree angles to each other.  This
gives you a really wide stereo image, and there's no phase cansolation or
dropout in the center.  I use this technique on drums a lot as well, all you
need are the two overheads and a kick and snare mic, and you're rolling.
