What instrument are you using? You should change the patches from within sonar. 
Depending on the instrument, you should find out if there are instrument 
definition files for it.

  hello, I'm new to midi so please be pashont with me.  I've recorded my first 
track and I want to add more to the song but when I change instruments the
  first track chages to the new instrument sound.  I am chaging instrument 
sounds on the keyboard itself.  Am I not supposed to change sounds this way? 
  Do I have to change something in sonar before chaing instruments?  Can 
someone please help me I'm at a loss!
