[ddots-l] Re: Looking for advice my file

Hi Mark,

The Shure 58 is a nice microphone, maybe you just need a pop shield to help stop the P's and B's.

Just a thought, the next time you are at a music store, ask if they have a Shure Beta 87A microphone that you may try. I believe it would really suit your rich textured voice as they are so clear sounding.

They are a condenser Microphone so need phantom power either from your mixer or external sound card.

Steve, thanks for the info.
Compression is something I've been thinking about.
One of my problems is understanding the various settings and what they mean.
Presets, that's sounds like the ticket for me.
Maybe I'll try sending all the tracks to a master track and give a shot at
compressing that track.
If anyone knows of a good article on the web, about this subject I would be
interrested in reading it.
As far as the distorted vocal track, I muted the track and I can not hear it.
I listened to it on speakers and headset.
However, I have notice my shure-58 seems to be a little hard to work with.
One thing I noticed is I have to be careful of words starting with the
letter b and p.
I get somewhat of a popping sound.
I'm wondering if this is what Darren is catching.
Maybe its just the 57 years of life is catching up with me.
I have the greatest respect for the members of this group and it is
important to hear different points of view.

Hi Mark,

First off, I think you have a lovely voice, you really capture the easy
relaxed warm feeling that the likes of Jim Reaves had.

I listened to it on speakers and headset.
is much better than me at picking up distorted tracks, I didn't
notice it but if Darren heard it, it's there.

You asked about Compression, well, it may help enhance your tracks.

I've only been using Sonar for a little while, but I have noticed a vast
difference to my tracks now that I have access to compressors.

I used to shy away from Compressors, however, I've just started
experimenting by applying Compression from the Sonitus:fx to different
instruments.
The Sonitus:fx has preset examples to choose from, it's very user friendly
and the examples are very good.

As for the music you record, my next project is to use Sonar to try and
recreate the sound of 1950's Rock 'N' Roll.

As the englishman once said, "One does what one can with what one has."

Hello group.
I actually got through my first project using Sonar producer 8.
Quite different from, Sonar 2.0.
I still have a few things to learn but I'm not doing too bad.
However, if some of you would like to listen to the song, here is the
link.

I realize I'm probably one of the oldest members of the group.
I mostly, do old and new country music, jazz, blues and old standards.
So I don't know if you younger folks would care for my music.
What I would like to hear from you folks who care to take a listen is,
what
do you think of the mix?
Do you think that compression would help the file?
Anything else you might think of.
On the file I used five audio tracks.
Equipment used Yamaha p90 digital piano, Roland fantom x7 keyboard, Alesis
SR16 drum machine and the Roland PK5 bass pedals.
I also did the leed and harmony vocals.
I'm not looking for praise, but advice on how to improve the file.
I do have one question.
What is the difference between volume control and volume trim control on a
track?
Thanks in advance.

Mark
