Hello Bobbi,
The sounds you are hearing are the result of your MIDI device or sound card. If you want realistic sounds, you need to invest in some better hardware, such as a MIDI keyboard or an external MIDI synthesizer, and appropriate amplifiers/speakers.

Hello all,
Recently I was informed that Sibelius was a product not just for Macs, and so I thought, oh boy I can compose and have things written down on paper! Well, everything seemed great, so I was able to obtain Sibelius itself. I just listened to one of the scores that came with it, and I enjoyed the music, but the instruments used to actually play the score back were just, just horrid! So, the only thing from stopping me from actually buying Sibelius Speaking isn't just the fact that it is nearly 300 dollars. I want to be able to not only compose and have my ideas at hand for the sighted, I want my compositions to be in an audio format that I can enjoy as well. However, the synthetic sounds I heard for the demo scores was not what I would call enjoyable. I want to find something that will produce realistic orchestral sounds, and I want to be able to put those realistic sounds into mp3, or even just a midi file, or something that I can have and listen to with a grin on my face, and not just those terribly unrealistic carnival-type instruments. Any suggestions are welcome, and I hope what I have proposed makes sense.

You have me curious now. I always thought that midi keyboards and midi synthesizers were the same thing. And if I were to get either, could I use Sib to create audio files of my works and have my computer play it as if the device were connected? Or would the files end up just using the sound card once the device was disconnected? Thanks again for your time.
