Actually if you use gigastudio as a rewire device and load several instruments into it, it will accept patch changes from sonar.

Has anyone had any success with Sonar and the Steinberg HALion system?

I've been doing some research and discovered that HALion is one of, if not
the, only sample system that can accept program change midi messages.

As the Steinberg Symphonic uses the HALion engine, it strikes me that the
same might be true of this.

The only down side is that you have to pre-load the programs you are going
to need so that it can switch from one instrument to another instantaneously
, and if the HALion interface is inaccessible that would have to be done as
part of a track template. As you can pre-load up to 128 programs, system
overhead is going to be massive. My colleague had it set to pre-load the
first 1.5 seconds of 2 instruments, and that used 28 megs of ram.

HALion has 16 slots which are assigned to 16 midi channels, and you can send
program change messages to HALion to make it switch program on the slot
connected to the midi channel you're sending on. Well, certainly you can
from within Cubase, but when my sighted colleague tried this on Sonar
earlier today it completely failed. I do not believe it should have done
however, as I can find nothing that indicates HALion and Sonar don't work
together.

Question is, is the interface accessible? Some other Steinberg products are,
such as Hypersonic, and V Guitarist, Bassist and Drummer are via Directxer,
but HALion? Hmm.

Also, does anyone know if the Motu Symphonic instrument uses Kontakt or
another inaccessible interface? I can't seem to find that anywhere. Perhaps
they've developed their own, and perhaps its usable? What a joke! LOL!

Gord, are you saying the Garritan demos of Jazz/Big Band are lying? LOL!

Yes, I believe Fable's Broadway/Big Band uses Kontakt or some variation of
it. Most complex synths do because its the only engine that offers
Round-Robin, auto-key switching, real-time articulation analysis etc.

The Kirk Hunter libraries are available as Giga instruments so they might
work with V Sampler, but I would imagine that Giga doesn't support some of
the Kontakt processing features in the first place, and V Sampler even less.

It's worth noting that there is a project,
(currently dormant) to put together a plan to
attack the problem of accessibility in a more
systematic way that was suggested and inspired by
the moderator of the Midi-mag list. There was a
period of spirited discussion a few months back,
followed by silence. I'd like to see this picked up.

At 04:35 AM 9/28/2007, you wrote:

OK, I've had a quick look at the interface and it's disgusting. Everything was bit maps, including the menus so everything would have to be remote controlled by Jaws, and the only verification would be the end result. In other words, you'd have to play it to see if you'd loaded the right instrument.

This would absolutely be a scripting job, and a big one for such a small player. Unless someone fancies writing an app to do on-screen OCR. (lol)

Sorry,

Dan

Hi,

You'd be OK until you encountered some dynamic data on the screen, at which
point you'd have no way of figuring out what's there. Creating a
representation of the menu bar, etc. shouldn't be a problem, though.

Best wishes.

Actually, I reckon you would. If you used HSC to grab the menus then,
supplemented that with a bit of JFW script then, it should probably work.
Any thoughts Tim?

It wouldn't even work with HSC. Even the drop down menus are completely bit mapped and invisible to jaws. You would have no way of knowing what you are
loading and where it is going.

Hmm, have you tried sorting out access to this with HSC?

GPO uses the NI Kontakt interface and is therefore not accessible. I am
working with experts on a solution involving NI Kore, but nothing yet.
This
solution will also apply to EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Silver, and Garriton
Jazz and Big Band ... if it works!

Not sure. I doubt that the Personal Orchestra is accessible.

garritan Personal orchestra is a separate softsynthe. A version of that
is called garritan
pocket orchestra and ships as part of Dimension Pro. Also, you get a
lite version of it in
Dimension LE which, ships with Sonar 7.

If your referring to the version that ships as part of Dimension Pro
then, it's totally
accessible for us. You can use it with CT for Sonar 6.

Hello,

I've asked about realistic orchestral sounds here before. It seems the
best
I can find, at the moment, are the Garritan Personal Orchestra. How
accessible is this for us? I remember Gordon said I'd have to get
sighted
help. How much sighted help would I need and how difficult would it be
for
a sighted person? In other words, would I need someone fairly computer
litterate?

Thanks! Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Laurie
