Hey, I hav a copy of haylion and I haven?t really had a chance to fiddle
around with it much, but there is a hole load of graphics on the screen that
I can navigate with the jaws cursor, so maybe, jst maybe this might be a
goer.

Has anyone had any success with Sonar and the Steinberg HALion system?

I've been doing some research and discovered that HALion is one of, if not
the, only sample system that can accept program change midi messages.

As the Steinberg Symphonic uses the HALion engine, it strikes me that the
same might be true of this.

The only down side is that you have to pre-load the programs you are going
to need so that it can switch from one instrument to another instantaneously

, and if the HALion interface is inaccessible that would have to be done as
part of a track template. As you can pre-load up to 128 programs, system
overhead is going to be massive. My colleague had it set to pre-load the
first 1.5 seconds of 2 instruments, and that used 28 megs of ram.

HALion has 16 slots which are assigned to 16 midi channels, and you can send

program change messages to HALion to make it switch program on the slot
connected to the midi channel you're sending on. Well, certainly you can
from within Cubase, but when my sighted colleague tried this on Sonar
earlier today it completely failed. I do not believe it should have done
however, as I can find nothing that indicates HALion and Sonar don't work
together.

Question is, is the interface accessible? Some other Steinberg products are,

such as Hypersonic, and V Guitarist, Bassist and Drummer are via Directxer,
but HALion? Hmm.

Also, does anyone know if the Motu Symphonic instrument uses Kontakt or
another inaccessible interface? I can't seem to find that anywhere. Perhaps
they've developed their own, and perhaps its usable? What a joke! LOL!

Gord, are you saying the Garritan demos of Jazz/Big Band are lying? LOL!

Yes, I believe Fable's Broadway/Big Band uses Kontakt or some variation of
it. Most complex synths do because its the only engine that offers
Round-Robin, auto-key switching, real-time articulation analysis etc.

The Kirk Hunter libraries are available as Giga instruments so they might
work with V Sampler, but I would imagine that Giga doesn't support some of
the Kontakt processing features in the first place, and V Sampler even less.

Matt

It's worth noting that there is a project,
(currently dormant) to put together a plan to
attack the problem of accessibility in a more
systematic way that was suggested and inspired by
the moderator of the Midi-mag list. There was a
period of spirited discussion a few months back,
followed by silence. I'd like to see this picked up.

At 04:35 AM 9/28/2007, you wrote:
