Hi Bryan.

That is good to know and cheers for clarifying the situation.

You all should be aware that Cakewalk isn't making anything off of you
when they sell you the MP3 encoder.

The MP3 format is patented by the Fraunhofer Society. Any program that
uses the algorithms for encoding MP3 files is obligated by law to pay
Fraunhofer a licensing fee. Many people think that the Lame encoder is
free, but, n fact, it is technically illegal to distribute the Lame
encoder in any other form than source code; distributing binary versions
of Lame is against the law. Sure, you find people online that distribute
Lame in binary form, but If Cakewalk included Lame with Sonar, they'd be
breaking the law. Cakewalk also realizes that some people will already
own an MP3 encoder license as part of another product that they've
already purchased (Sound Forge, WinAmp, etc), and so does not force you
to purchase yet another MP3 encoder license when you purchase Sonar.

The external encoder function in Sonar makes it possible to use any sort
of encoder with Sonar, though it takes some effort to configure.
However, if you purchase the MP3 encoder from Cakewalk, it will directly
integrate with Sonar, and you will be entitled to use that encoder on
any future version of Sonar without any additional charge.

Hope this clears things up. This isn't a scam by Cakewalk to get your
money. They'd give it to you for free if they could.

Bryan

Hi gord.

Installing the lame encoder was actually simple once I knew what to
enter in
the various fields.

At the end of the day, we've paid several hundred for Sonar, I wouldn't
have
thought including the encoder would've caused them any troubles.

Cheers

If I were you, I'd just spring for the 20 bucks and buy their's. Or
you
could try writing to Cakewalk tech support.

Hi all.

I'm trying to set up Cakewalk so it uses the Lame Encoder for
exporting
mixes as mp3s.

However, I haven't a clue how to get it configured correctly and
there
doesn't appear to be any info eitehr in the Sonar 7 help or the
CakeTalking help.

I assume you do it through the external encoeer configuration dialog,
but
it's asking me to impor a registry file and I haven't a clue where to

find the reg file or what it's called.

I've copied the lameEnc.dll file into the shared utilities folder in
Cakewalk, but I'm lost after that.

cheers
Darren
