Chris is completely right in saying that the SM 57 is the mike of choice for guitar amps. The truth is that these cheap little mikes are built to last, tough as rocks, and will last you forever. They are perfect for handling the extreme transients spewed out from loud guitar cabinets, just like they're ideal snare mikes. They simply respond to all the frequencies that naturally please the human ear. They aren't the flattest of mikes, in terms of their frequency response, but they do a fantastic job!

Honestly? most guitar tracks seem to be recorded using inexpensive Shure SM57's. There are much better mics out there, but for some reason, most people seem to love the 57. Maybe give that a try. Picking one up used shouldn't cost very much at all.
