George,
Recently, I've noticed that JAWS will start reading a few lines of
an e-mail and then start repeting those lines and then read all the way to
the bottom having begun the "repetition." I happen to have JAWS 10 and a
free version of AVG that a computer dealer installed after a last hard
crash. Could removing AVG, or installing this patch have a positive effect
on my problem?

Given the current thread regarding JAWS 11 stability, etc., I thought the
following might be of interest to a few of you. It comes from the U.K. main
JAWS dealer, hence I know has credibility.

George.

Dear JAWS-UK Listers

For a while I have been hearing of small but significant numbers of JAWS
users having focus problems whilst using JAWS, these would be really quite
noticeable by their frequency rather than some random issue that crops up
occasionally as a part of normal sessions. Many had assumed that it was a
JAWS 11 problem although I also heard of others that had the same experience
with JAWS 10 and maybe as far back possibly as JAWS 9.0.

With the kind assistance of a few who contacted me off list and supplied
further information, in particular Deon Van Wyk (who frequents this
list) we have arrived at an answer to the problem, some of you may already
even have found the answer yourself. However here it goes.

Introduced in AVG 9.0 is a new feature that allows the anti-virus to have
absolutely minimal impact on the system when a user is running a game, user
forums have reported that gamers have been affected by a problem when this
option is turned on where their game is minimized unexpectedly. It also
turns out that this feature is also possibly adversely affecting JAWS
because it sees it as a full screen application too.

Two potential solutions have emerged since these reports were picked up and
either one may be desirable depending on circumstances. The first is to
disable the suspected feature and thereby workaround the problem, a second
is to install a temporary patch into AVG 9.0. Please see details of
solutions below.

Work around the issue by disabling gaming feature:
1 Locate the AVG program icon on the desktop or use "insert+F11"
to locate it in the system tray to activate it.
2 In the AVG main window press alt+T to open the "Tools" menu.
3 Then press down arrow to locate "advanced Settings" and press
ENTER to open.
4 A new window will open placing you on the "Appearance" branch
of
the tree view.
5 Press the TAB key until you reach the checkbox labelled
"enable
gaming mode when a full-screen application is executed" and press SPACEBAR
to check it.
6 Then press TAB until you reach the "OK" button and press
SPACEBAR on that to dismiss the dialogue and save the settings.
7 Please then restart the machine and log back into Windows for
the settings to fully take effect.

Use the temporary patch to fix the issue:
A temporary patch has been posted by an employee of Grisoft who develop AVG
via their online forum under the post linked here:

http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=4101
5#
post_41015

Instructions for installation below:

1 Please direct your browser to the f9ollowing link below to
download the patch update file issued by Grisoft for AVG 9.0:
http://forums.avg.com/attachment/freeforum/ww/41015/113
2 Create an empty folder on the computer hard disk into which
you
can extract the files from the download.
3 When the download is complete extract the contents of the ZIP
file to an empty folder on the hard disk.
4 The ZIP should only contain one file called "AVGCPNFIX.EXE",
please rn this file to install the patch for AVG 9.0.
5 After installing the patch please restart your machine for the
patch to take effect after the reboot.

Hope this is useful.

Regards.
