First of all, you probably want to set your sample rate to 44.1, not
22.5. Ssecond, your soundcard may only be able to play back a certain
number of tracks at once. Third, see 2, the number of tracks you can
record and play back relates to the amount of RAM, and disk space and
the speed of your hard disk and any number of other factors. If you got
this stuff from Dancing Dots, have Gordon go through your configuration
and explain its potential and limitations.

Last night, I created my first piece of music. Because I know there are
readers with a wide range of sensabilities, I won't print all the lyrics
here. I will say this much. It consisted of four vocal tracks which
created a four part harmony: consisted of two bars and four words: the
first word was "this" and the last word was "test." I have not hooked
up my midi equipment yet. I did uninstall norton and some other nasties
from the taskbar. My whole purpose in doing this was to simply record
something. I didn't worry much about levels: I just set the frequency to
22.5 and the bit depth to 16. I found thatthat when I recorded the
forth track, the other three tracks which were playing back as I
recorderded were very choppy, and the whole meter of my groundbreaking
work was lost. My question is this: Are there any good sites on the net
which discuss the compromises one can make to create a machine to work
decently with audio, while still realizing that the machine will mainly
be used for school homework and other things. I have already had a list
member vollunteer to assist me, and though I will most likely take him u
p on it, I'd like to understand the issues and trouble shooting
techniques myself, so I can be a smarter wiser person. I don't want to
clutter the list with spacific suggestions which might apply to me, as
I'm sure most of you have been through this already, but if there are
helpful links people have found, feel free to post them. Thanks in
advance.also, is there a program which will let me stop services which
are running? I don't want to go through the hastle of unchecking lots of
stuff in msconfig, then rebooting, then rechecking them when my work is
done unless I absolutely must.
