Hi. This makes no sense to me. I've installed Caketalking 8.5 only to my Sonar 8.5 and haven't seen anything to suggest I also need 8.3. If it is the case that 8.3 is also needed, it should've been stated, we're not mind readers. Why wasn't this posted before? Most of us are only just waking up to the very existence of CT 8.3... Why the hell wasn't this made clearer? From the first bunch of guff re: CT 8.5, DD stated that CT 8.5 would render Sonar v8.3 totally workable... Why is it only now that the secret of CT 8.3 is revealed? Man, DancingDotz really make stuff unnecessarily difficult/confusing/infuriating... Mega grimace! ----- Original Message ----- From: Bryan Smart To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, October 08, 2009 11:18 PM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: CT 8.5 installation pain! OH, almost forgot the most important point. Due to the way that Jaws scripts work, you can only have either CT8.3 or CT8.5 installed. You install the one that matches the version of Sonar that you intend to use. You can not install them both. For example, if you install CT8.5, then Sonar 8.5 will operate normally. However, if you start Sonar 8.31, it will seem to talk, but will have lots of problems. This is because Jaws is trying to use the 8.5 scripts in 8.3, and because the CT8.5 installer customized the Sonar 8.5 settings for accessibility, not the Sonar 8.3 settings. We know that this is a pain, but this is just how things have to be when we have a new version of Sonar that is sort of, but sort of not, a new complete version. If you must run both Sonar 8.02/8.3 and Sonar 8.5 at the same time, then there is a workaround. Install two versions of Jaws on your computer, such as Jaws 9 and Jaws 10. Install CakeTalking 8.5, and select to only install the scripts in to Jaws 10. Then, run the CakeTalking 8.3 installer, and select to only install the scripts in to Jaws 9. Now, just start Jaws 9 when you work in Sonar 8.3, and Jaws 10 when you work in Sonar 8.5. Traditionally, CakeTalking major versions have closely mirrored Sonar versions. CT5 for Sonar 5, CT6 for Sonar 6, etc. People would expect that CT8.5 would work with both Sonar 8.5 and the older Sonar 8.3 since they share the same major version number. Normally, that would be true. Unfortunately, Cakewalk has really made things confusing with Sonar 8.5, and that has confused the CakeTalking versioning scheme, also. Sonar 8.5 should have been called Sonar 9. It doesn't work like a Sonar update (like Sonar 8.31 does for Sonar 8.0). Instead, it installs Sonar 8.5 in to a new folder, adds new icons to the start menu and desktop, and generally acts like it is a new major version of Sonar. It appears similar to if you had both Sonar 7 and Sonar 8 installed on your DAW at once. However, Sonar 8.5 isn't it's own stand-alone product. You have to have Sonar 8 installed and updated, as Sonar 8.5 still needs bits from Sonar 8.3 on your computer in order to function . Besides being annoying for anyone, this creates problems for CakeTalking, because there are now two places where it needs to place files, and there are two versions of Sonar who's appearance and accessibility settings must be tweaked during installation. The way that David has made this work is to create two separate CakeTalking installers. CakeTalking 8.3 loads in to the Sonar 8 installation, and CakeTalking 8.5 loads in to the Sonar 8.5 installation. I hope that the following clears up any questions about what versions of Sonar and CakeTalking match, and who can run each of them. Sonar 8 This is where we've been up until this month. If you only have a CakeTalking 8 license, then this is the best version of Sonar/CakeTalking available to you. You should install Sonar 8.0 and use the free patches from Cakewalk to update to Sonar 8.02. Then, install CT8. It is also possible to install the free Sonar 8.31 update and continue to run with CakeTalking 8, however the access is only partial. If you decide to run this way, then you need to re-install CakeTalking after installing the Sonar 8.31 update in order to fix some essential settings that are cleared by the Sonar 8.31 update. Download CT8 here: http://www.dancingdots.com/ct/8 Sonar 8.3 If you have a CakeTalking 8.5 license, then you can run CakeTalking 8.3 with Sonar 8.31. Pay attention to these version numbers. Said a different way, you aren't able to buy a CakeTalking 8.3 license. 8.3 licenses were never sold. However, your license for CakeTalking 8.5 will activate both CakeTalking 8.3 and CakeTalking 8.5. Older CakeTalking 8 licenses will not activate CakeTalking 8.3. If you wish to use Sonar 8.3 (such as if you have not upgraded Sonar to 8.5), then you can install Sonar 8, update it to Sonar 8.31 with the free update from Cakewalk, and install CakeTalking 8.3. Download CakeTalking 8.3 here: http://www.dancingdots.com/ct/8.3sj Sonar 8.5 If you wish to use Sonar 8.5, then you'll need to install Sonar 8, update it to Sonar 8.31 with the free update from Cakewalk, install the Sonar 8.5 upgrade, install the free Sonar 8.51 update, and then install CakeTalking 8.5. Keep in mind that each of those steps has many sub-steps: such as loading the content DVDs and patches. Download CT8.5 here: http://www.dancingdots.com/ct/8.5sj Be very careful to get the correct version of CakeTalking for the version of Sonar that you're using. If you get the incorrect version, then Sonar will appear to partially work with CakeTalking, but many features will be broken. This is because while you may have some scripts loaded in Jaws, they won't necessarily be the correct scripts, and CakeTalking may have updated the settings of the wrong version of Sonar. I hope that this helps. If anyone is still confused, then please reply to this message, or call tech support at 610-783-6692, option 3. Mike, did you put in your new CT 8.5 serial number? Also, is it authorised ok in CT 8.5? Hmm, I wonder if you may need to do an install with the more up to date version of CT for 8.3.1 then, do the CT8.5 install after that. Hey list! I've installed CT 8.5 but, when I open Sonar 8.3, I'm told that I'm using an unauthorized version of Cake Talking and I should go purchase it! I also had to uninstall CT 8, because, after CT 8.5 refused to authorize, CT 8 just didn't work at all! Please can anyone tell me what the hell is going down?
