MessageI'm hoping that sample-based plugs like sfz or dimension will be able to
make use of the additional ram. I have run out of ram for loading samples many
times. It would definitely work with rewire devices like giga or reason when
used in conjunction with Sonar because they are treated as separate
applications.

  Hello Phil,

How is the additional 1 Gb usage recognized? Does Sonar report the available
RAM?

Also since I'm in the pre-purchase stage of a DAW is there any benefit to
getting 4 Gb RAM? According to the web site it sounds like the additional 1 Gb
above 3Gb is still used by the Windows executive software.
  processes".

I ask because of this statement:

"Operating systems based on Microsoft Windows NT technologies have always
provided applications with a flat 32-bit virtual address space that describes 4
gigabytes (GB) of virtual memory. The address space is usually split so that 2
GB of address space is directly accessible to the application and the other 2
GB is only accessible to the Windows executive software."

Dave, Sonar must be able to do that as I know of guys running 3GB of RAM
with the switch enabled in the boot.ini file with Sonar on a 32 bit version of
XP Pro.

Does anyone know if Sonar can make use of the additional 1 Gb? According
to the instructions on the following page:

      http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

      ...the following must also apply:

The /3GB switch allocates 3 GB of virtual address space to an application
that uses IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE in the process header. This switch
allows applications to address 1 GB of additional virtual address space above 2
GB.

3GB switch only works with XP Pro

Gord worte: Windows is most likely only using 2gb of anyway.

Phil replied: you could always use the 3GB switch to get Windows to
see the rest of your RAM. You would need to add that to your boot.ini file.

            Jeff:

512 mb of ram is really low these days. Probably if you took your
existing system and upgraded to a gig, you would be amazed at the difference.
As far as track count goes, I can play 24 tracks of audio with a bunch of
effects and eq with no problem. I'm only using a 3.2ghz single processor on my
main daw with 3gb of ram, which Windows is most likely only using 2gb of
anyway. Just make sure you are using a dedicated drive for your audio.

              Hello All:

I'm thinking of upgrading my studio processor from 2.4 ghz and
512 RAM to something a bit more beefy. So, this is just a couple of quick
questions for any who care to answer.

1> What kind of systems are you using to run Sonar??, i.e.
processor speed, RAM, HD's

2> How many simultaneous audio tracks can you record/playback??

3> In your opinion, which is a better choice for improving
dropout problems, more memory or higher processor speed??

Thanks in advance for any responses.

              Jeff
