No presumption should be made that costs money. First do some sleuthing by
re-routing cables and checking grounds, etc. A 1kHz signal could also be the
4th harmonic of the ac line so that's the lowest-cost activity at this
point - check all the ac sources for coupling and grounding.
Then you might try substituting some other audio output device in place of
your sound card to see if the source of noise is in your computer, or
somewhere after the insertion point.

The soundcard is an external firewire interface. There is an onboard
firewire port on the computer that the interface uses. It sounds like an
external firewire card would be useful. Am I correct in thinking this?
