hello list,
I've been searching for info on "best practices" for formatting disks
dedicated to audio. Specifically optimal cluster sizes. I've formatted my
Glyph with windowsXP defaults(4K cluster size), but I see that I could opt
for larger sizes which supposedly improve performance at the expense of disk
space.
That is, small files like text and other data files might only use small
portions of a cluster-wasting the remainder of the single cluster needed to
store it. The larger the cluster size, the more wasted space. However, the
typical multi-megabyte audio file would benefit from larger
clusters-requiring less disk activity to read/write the file.
With cluster size options ranging from 4k up to 64k, I wonder if there is
any experience out there as to an optimal choice of cluster size for a disk
dedicated to audio/video storage. Also, is any improvement in disk
performance significant enough to warrent the custom format?
thanks,
