Tim:I have a ProjectMix IO and I also have SampleTank. So, you think that using the Mackie display reader you developed, I could control some of the features of SampleTank? I would be very interested in trying that out.

I'd be very interested to know if anybody has both SampleTank and aMackie-compliant control surface, as I believe that we might be able to getmore use out of this application using the Mackie Display Reader. Notice thatit isn't just that he plays notes, but he controls the swells. That is something that most synths just don't allow you to do at all with wind instruments. The only way that I know that I could produce a sound like that is to use hardware, like the Motif with a wind controller, or, better yet, the VL-1with a wind controller. Yamaha's brass is alright for a synth. However, the Motif directly supports a wind controller, and the patches are programmed towork with it.If you use nearly any keyboard workstation, the wind controller will simplycontrol volume and a filter to dull the sound. The VL-1 will actually add harmonics and growl as you blow harder. There is a physical modeling plug for the computer from Arturia called Brassthat is supposed to do what the VL-1 does in software. I've never used it, though, so have no idea regarding the accessibility. The closest sounding software I've personally found that may be able to recreate this sound is. http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/demos_trumpet.php Not sure whether this software would be accessible. If you could recommend something that has that dirty sounding 1950's sax anda trumpet with plenty of bight, that would be Fantastic. I don't need loads of articulations as most of the arrangements are Combinations of horns. There haven't been too manynew Akai libraries produced in the last 10 years or so, as anyone trying tomake huge sample libraries needs a PC to do it. If you're converting Akai libraries, then you're basically trying to bring old hardware sampler sounds to your DAW. There are some nice old sounds, but, on the whole, they aren't going to sound like the new mega libraries that you've heard. As an aside, I think that one of the worst instruments that synths attemptare horns. I've heard some solo versions that are pretty good. The Motif XShas extra articulations for trumpet and sax that you can trigger left handed, as well as sounding correct if you're playing legato, but you're never going to get the real dynamics control out of a keyboard. Yamaha hasthat breath controller device, but, after a certain point, you might as wellgo play the real instrument. The VL-1 could do a great job with emulating horns, but, as I said above, its just emulating solos. I don't know. I guess it depends on what sort of sound you want. Are youtrying to find horn sections for doing unison punches in a pop song? Are youarranging for a whole section? Yu just trying to play a solo? Maybe we can suggest something that can work. Keyboard also totally sucks at any orchestral solo strings (never enough dynamics and glide control), accordion (could be better, but no one ever bothers to program it), pedal steel (hardly anything has poly aftertouch anymore in order to handle the independent string bends), and, to a largeextent, clav (synths don't respond fast enough to really do clav or virtual analog stuff anymore). Most all of this can't be fixed with gigs and gigs ofsamples. Just enter on the link below go to MP3's, press enter on one of them, now press cursor key and arrow up or down until you hear jaws say, "Noinformation available" press right mouse key and press enter. The MP3 shouldthen play. These samples are amazing. http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/demos_trumpet.php Steve W ----- Original Message ----- From: "Omar Binno" <omarbinno@xxxxxxxxx> To: <ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2010 1:35 AM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Akai samples Speaking of Akai, I just picked up an older akai s6000. Akai has software on their site which enables users to work with the sampler through windows. Software is called the aksys software. I've briefly messed around with it with jaws, and it seems okay as far as accessibility, although I had to use the jaws cursor for the most part. Has anyone else messed with the software? If so, any feedback? I'm curious if that process isn't buggy. I've used it to convert a few Sample Tank samples with no issues, and was curious on how well it works with other samples. Thanks for any info.
