Is that true as well if I'm just adding compression to the vocals? Never
use the sends, just put the compression into the vocal bus I've created?

Just insert the compressor and pick the preset you want. All of the
tracks
that are assigned to the master bus will be fed through the compressor.
You
would never use an aux send on a compressor anyway.
