the problems you encounter are quite "normal", but not serious. You should 
have a look at the mailing archive of the mailing list "docbook-apps". There 
you will find a lot of contributions which you may find helpful.

Another interesting mailing list you can search is  
http://xml.apache.org/fop/maillist.html.

As you can see, most problems can be solved by setting some paramters in a 
customized driver file. If you find some parameters, that should be used by 
tidbit, let me know.
