Hello everyone. Deafblind Victorians has had many activities happen over the
last few months. Happy reading.
June 9th: Paola Avila represented DBV at the first meeting of Victorian
Deafblind consultative forum with services providers. This was an
opportunity to share information and resources on deafblindness issues with
other organisations such as John Pierce Centre, Deaf Children Australia,
Blind Citizens Australia, Vision Australia, CHARGE syndrome Association and
Aurora. They discussed gaps and concerns that we are facing while providing
services to people who are deafblind. It was agreed that this will be held
every two months meetings.
June 23: During deafblind awareness week, seven deafblind members helped ran
a Deafblind World workshop for Melbourne City Council staff at Melbourne
Town hall. About 16 staff attended. We first provided them the opportunity
to experience a Deafblind World activity using paper goggles with very small
holes and earplugs; next we talked about our life with deafblindess. This
was followed by providing information about What is DBV, different types of
communication, deafblindness and technology, a brief demonstration of
guiding techniques and questions from the audience. Finally we proudly
celebrated with a beautiful huge chocolate cake and lunch provided by the
Council. We received positive feedback and the Council is very keen to
continue working with Deafblind Victorians. DBV was represented by Colleen,
Paola, Joe, Heather, Alex, Trudy, Sandi.
July 14th: Colleen and Heather were invited to Travellers Aid Companion
Service for morning tea with the volunteers. Heather talked briefly about
the importance of having the companion service to assist and guide deafblind
people to navigate the city and surrounds, making the city accessible and
safe, ensuring access to correct platforms and trains at Flinders Street
Station. Some staff from City of Melbourne also attended including Vickie
Feretopolous the Senior Policy Officer Ageing and Inclusion and Peter Whelan
the Metro Access Project Officer and Social investment. Vickie provided an
overview of the City of Melbournes vision, being a city for all people.
Accessibility for all people is a priority for the City of Melbourne. The
City of Melbourne has funded Travellers Aid to extend the Medical Companion
Service to a Companion Service which will assist people, not only to medical
appointments but also to legal, work, training, and educational
appointments. Note: Travellers Aid is developing a brochure for Free
Companion Service and it will be distributed to the deafblind community
soon.
July 19th and 21st and September 20th : DBV presented three training
workshops to Travellers Aid volunteers. Total of 48 Travellers Aid Companion
Service Volunteers attended. Volunteers had no idea what to expect when they
were wearing goggles and ear plugs. They had to find information and try to
communicate without talking. DBV members would try communicating with them
using different types of communication. They shared their feelings of
frustration, confusion, feeling lost, vulnerable, scared, and dizzy. The
participants learnt a little bit of understanding of the deaf blind world,
learnt to guide, some basic communication skills such as writing on the palm
of a hand, emergency sign on a persons back, toilet sign and counting.
Travellers Aid want more training next year and to continue working with
DBV. DBV members who helped run the workshops were Heather, Colleen, Joe,
Kathy, John, Richard and Paola.
August 12th: DBV was proud to organise a big event! We organised to meet and
have a presentation form a Japanese deafblind man; Dr. Nobuyuki Takahashi,
he is the President of the Japanese Federation of Deafblind and a Doctor of
Engineering Teaching at Matsuyama school of the Blind. He talked about
Welfare for the Deafblind in Japan. There were about 80 people who attended
the workshop including 15 deafblind members, 16 interpreters, some
volunteers, auslan students and others. Thanks to ADBC for their support and

September 2nd to October 1: Dangerous Deeds exhibition second showing was at
the Frankston Arts Centre. It was launched on Friday 2nd September and was
opened by Mayor James Dooley The exhibition which finished on the 2nd
October has 18 videos made by self advocates from the Victorian Disability
Movement. Deafblind Victorians Self Advocacy group participated and made one
of the videos. Michelle, Heather, Trudy were filmed in January 2015, doing
ceramic arts and talking about the issues and barriers facing the deafblind
community. On 7th September Heather was invited by SARU (Self Advocacy
Resources Unit) to present at the Frankston Arts Centre, she presented to
about 30 VCE Arts Students about DBV and her arts life. The feedback from
people who visited at exhibition was positive. The exhibition will be
touring Victoria, the next showing is in Whittlesea, then Maribyrnong,
Alexandra, Moe and Warrnambool. The Whittlesea exhibition runs from 19th
October to 3rd November at the The Great Hall, 25 Ferres Blvd, South Morang.

September 21: Michelle representative DBV at the NDIS Working Group meeting
at Ross House; along with other self advocacy representatives from around
Victoria. The meeting was a planning meeting in preparation to meet with
David Bowen CEO of NDIA in December. This group meets regularly with David
Bowen and the NDIA team.
