Thanks for your help. Powering off didn't quite do it, but . .
I didn't have USBKick; found it chez Drobe
and it works a treat.

I had exactly the same problem with the same scanner.
By powering everything off completely at the mains then back on it cleared whatever the problem was and now works OK; although as an aside I am finding that DPlingScan, which I also use to crop and size JPEGs seems to stiff my machine fairly frequently and as you say Alt + Break doesn't achieve anything with such a freeze, it requires a power off.
