I can't see any other way to do it.

It seems you want colours that know what they're being painted on top of, that is a more sophisticated rendering model than OP and traditional systems support.

Thanks, David.  Having got myself a bit more organised with master pages
set up appropriately, the above isn't actually too much of a pain. It is as you might imagine a fairly rare requirement so I'm quite happy to continue in that
way.
