As I understand it, the 'italic' option simply scans the list of
family members in the font and chooses the first one that is
'italic' (or Oblique). In an alphabetic list, such as the filer
and OPro uses for fonts, Homerton Condensed Bold Oblique comes
before Homerton Oblique, so it chooses that one first.
I have this problem with many other font families, and it is a real
pain! Same happens with 'bold', of course. The 'I' and 'B' options
are so unreliable I don't use them now.
.....
I brought this up a very long time ago, but it fell on stony ground.
If it isn't possible to correct the fault, which makes it awfully
easy to choose the wrong font by mistake, could the B and I icons
perhaps be removed? But I don't have another application which can't
get it right, and while we RISC OS afficionados will put up with a
lot, I can't imagine the PC world accepting this sort of thing.
Presumably this coding goes back to the days when no-one expected
more than four fonts in a family.

Richard Partridge.
No, No - please don't remove the B and I icons! The solution I used for my
own software was simply to have an easily-editable text look-up file (along
the line of the "hosts" file) showing Family name, Normal name, Normal
Italic name, Bold name and Bold Italic name. e.g.
Homerton Medium Medium.Oblique Bold Bold.Oblique
Trinity Medium Medium.Italic Bold Bold.Italic
etc.
Would it be possible to provide something similar for Ovation?
