Steve's reply caused me to have a dig about in the directories
being backed up for anything unusually large. I used !Coeden
which gives a tree structure and a graphical indication of file
size so anything odd shows up clearly. No excessively large
files but some massive recursion inside !Scrap.
I must have had a senior moment in the middle of last week and
decided that the 3rd SD window referring to 'Scrap' meant
!Scrap.etc when it just means a place where files can be held
until they are ditched: not quite the same thing. Anyway, I had
dragged my Boot:Resources.!Scrap.ScrapDirs.IDdisabled into that
window and that had started the rot because one of the
directories I back up is !Boot. I really don't need to save the
old files anyway so that window should have been left blank.
This /is/ reproducible if you set that scrap location and then
backup !Boot (but don't blame me if it mucks up your !Scrap).
I have now found a posting to this list by David on this very
topic which warns of problems: Message-ID:

Silly me! I'm sorry to have wasted your time but it may be a
useful warning to other users.
Brian.
