[softwarelist] Scanning software oddity

For a long time now I've been accusing my wife of being careless when
saving files, as she often leaves unwanted copies of JPEGs in the
root directory of our Iyonix. She has now found out how it happens; I
have been maligning her!

If we load a graphic into David Pilling's Scanning Software, and then
save it as a JPEG by dragging into an Ovation Pro frame (or Artworks,
or Easiwriter), the drag works fine, but a copy of the JPEG is also
made in the root directory of the hard disk; at the same time, the
file name in the DPSS window is changed to <Wimp$Scrap>. This does
not happen if the file is transferred as a Sprite, nor of course if
the modified JPEG is saved to hard disk and loaded to Ovation Pro
from there.

I would have gone on accusing my beloved of carelessness had she not
transferred a JPEG which happened to be called "Route" (no suffix).
If you dare, just try putting a file called "Route" into your root
directory, and see what happens when you re-boot - but be warned; it
took me two days to find what had gone wrong and wipe the offending
file. Congratulations to anyone who knows the operating system well
enough to predict the effect.

DPSS 1.24 (I've also checked v1.18). Iyonix on RISC OS 5.11.

Regards,

Richard Partridge.
