For the reason described here(?):

I'm using MS Office Word 2003.

Aha.

That's useful to know.

OK, I think I'm beginning to understand ...

Will the following help?

In the usual place, you will find RTFtest2.zip containing: (1) original
MSWord document, (2) RTF version generated by OpenOffice Writer v2.0
(from the MSWord file), (3) Same RTF imported into OPW.

The OpenOffice RTF is pretty close to the original MSWord document and,
as far as I can see, there's no reference to Times New Roman CE, etc. in
the OpenOffice RTF -- which would suggest to me that OO has dealt
effectively with the Windows font substitution.

Looking at the OpenOffice RTF in OPW ...
- there's a (unwanted) font change in the first two lines, but no font
change provoked by "Unicode" characters/missing fonts (as happened with
MSWord RTF)
- hanging indents, space before/after paragraph, allcaps, underlining,
bullet points, superscript, etc. still not interpreted correctly (and
Unicode, of course).
