I think, in the View menu, you can switch off display of images (replaced by
a cross). Then when you scroll down you can select and delete the image, or
whatever. OP makes no attempt to render image so no error occurs.

Thanks ... but I think I've discovered a more tortuous way of doing the same thing :(
