There are limits to what applets can do. So most of the things I suggested need work on the main program. MS Word import/export could be done as an extension (a filter/transloader rather than an applet), and that means it could be done by a third party. 


Tables! Now that's tricky. Personally, the flexibility and
for my work, but could that too be resolved via an Applet?
People have had a go at tables applets, but realistically to provide something useful they have to be part of the main program.
