What I like about DDL is that other programs can (or could) generate output
in DDL form, for example one might be able to generate reports out of a
database system as DDL files, then a user could define how they wanted
various styles used in that report to look. It'd be a bit like a program
generating HTML or XML output whose final look depended on a separate
stylesheet.
