You can save the entire document as DDL - in that case it is the entire
document and all that you can do is reload it, and bugs apart get
something identical to what you set off with.
There is nothing about this that would suggest you could start dropping
it into another document and getting arbitrary things to change.
Or you can save text stories as DDL - in that case you're going to lose
everything except the text and styles/effects, but you should be able to
reload them into another document with different frames etc.
The game you could play is to save the whole document as DDL, edit the
DDL in a text editor (work out where the master page size is) and then
reload.
I'll grant you that sometimes the system of different master pages for
different chapters is not as easy as it could be. Like so much it was
designed with good intentions. However once you're used to Impression it
doesn't look particularly friendly. I did once work out how to change to
having the same master page for more than one chapter, but like so much
else this is unlikely to ever be done.
