[softwarelist] Re: OPW -- "not enough memory"

I was smiling about the thing with the dictionaries, I recently reinstalled XP (on a new hard disc, you'll be relieved to hear) and I forgot to install the dictionary.

Having moved all my OPW files and software to another computer, I have a problem ... so far with one document. This is a 318Mb file created in OPW 2.90 (20 Nov 2006). I can open the file and print it (to PDF), but if I attempt any editing I get "not enough memory".

No smiles about this though. One idea, Windows can be set up to allocate 3GB or 2GB to user programs.

No, I didn't do that on the previous system. I've tried setting the /3GB switch in the Boot.ini file in the current system, but it makes no difference ... unless I've made the changes in the wrong place (?):

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /3GB

I suppose it might be that something is making OPW allocate memory in a different way on the new machine - however things like applets, etc. etc. should only use tiny amounts of memory. Loading/closing documents before you load the problem one might have an effect.

Maybe I've just exceeded the capabilities of this particular computer. Clearly, it's the images that make the file so large. Without them, the document is only 236KB. In order to get into the file and delete the images, I temporarily installed OPW on my wife's computer, which is also a Pentium 4 3GHz with 1MB physical RAM but has a good graphics card (better than the one in my old computer). It just about coped with the 318MB file, but editing was extremely slow (long time lag between key press and action). Makes me appreciate the capabilities of the (now defunct) Athlon 2600+ system ... I always had the impression that it was a more capable processor than the 3GHz P4.

Next step is to try reducing the size of the images before dropping them back into the file. Perhaps I can get the file down to a size that my current P4 system can handle.

Incidentally, why doesn't referencing pictures or using proxies (seem to) have any effect on file size?
