Yes, I suspect they are WMFs. In this particular case, I could switch
off direct PostScript ... but I tend to have it switched on by default
because, if it's not switched on, then in certain documents that
contain TIFF pictures, I find that a thin black line sometimes appears
along the edge of the picture in the resulting PDF. I don't know why
this happens, but having direct PS on seems to prevent it happening.
The thin black lines are probably because the pictures don't fill the
frames.
There's an old problem, about "scale to fit", ideally this should make a
picture just fill a frame with no pixels of background visible and no
pixels of picture invisible.
To achieve this I suppose one would have to have a flag that said "this
picture should just fill the frame", well I didn't think of that on day
one, and just allowed the program to specify a scale, the result is that
if you render things in enough ways gaps appear.
BTW there are no TIFF files in documents, TIFF is not a natively
supported format, so the TIFF files will have been converted to some
other format - .bmp
