in particular was able to select the printer.

This is not a problem with RISCOS because the printer is easily selected from
the system at the icon bar.
I've encountered all the above myself. I can see the argument for wanting to save the printer with the document - perhaps even more information, some documents I always print using duplex (print both sides).
I've just not been brave enough to make the changes - you may not always want a given printer, for example if a document is passed to someone else.
