I used to get frustrated by this all the time and it happens with normal text
too, not just tables. I eventually realised that there was an invisible
character in a larger font on the same line, causing it to be lower than it
visually should be. Pressing return moves it off the current line onto the next
line down so the previously too low line is then adjusted back up to where it
seemed like it should be. The answer is to delete the invisible character,
ideally using the keypad delete to delete to the right of the caret.
