Yes, Pamphlet printing is my usual method.

I had mis-understood the helpfile in the Imposition applet - I d read it as
duplicating the functionallity of Pamphlet printing.

Thank you for encouraging me to investigate it and see that it does what I
want.

Preferably a graphical utility which allows setting the number of pages per
section and indicates how many sheets each section will take and the
position/orientation of the pages on the sheet.

If my son doesn't find anything else to occupy his summer I will ask him if
he can look at a command-line utility that takes pages per sheet and pages
per section as parameters (his A levels include Computing and he's planning
on studying Robotics at uni).
