Perhaps an old point, there is no point scanning at a higher resolution
than the optical resolution of your scanner.
It's an old point because these days 1200 dpi is all too likely to be
the optical res.
Point taken ... I use an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo which is claimed to
have an optical resolution of 4800dpi, and a max resolution of 12800dpi.
